General Information

What is the Cuilcagh Boardwalk Trail?

The Cuilcagh Boardwalk Trail, also known as the “Stairway to Heaven,” is a scenic walking trail in County Fermanagh that leads across peat boglands and up wooden boardwalk steps to a viewpoint near the summit of Cuilcagh Mountain.

How long is the trail?

The full out-and-back route is approximately 12 km (7.5 miles) and takes around 2.5 to 3.5 hours, sometimes more, to complete, depending on pace and weather.

How difficult is the hike?

The trail is considered moderate.

The final section includes ~450 steps and a steep incline, which may be challenging for some.

Good fitness and walking shoes are recommended.

Planning Your Visit

What are the opening hours?

The trail is open year-round, with access generally allowed during daylight hours.

It’s best to start early, especially during weekends or holidays when it gets busy.

Do I need to book in advance?

If using the recommended “Stairway To Heaven” car park, pre-booking a parking space is strongly recommended.

Spaces are plentiful, but the trail is very popular.

*Subject to availability, we do allow parking without advance booking.

Is there a cost to visit?

Walking the trail is free, but parking costs £7 for the full day (subject to change).

A free overflow car park is located about 1 km away at Killykeegan Nature Reserve.

Facilities & Rules

Are dogs allowed on the trail?

No, dogs are not permitted, even on leads, due to livestock and environmental protection.

Are there toilets on the trail?

There are no toilets along the actual trail itself.

We provide toilets for our parking clients, along with other facilities under development at the location.

The nearest public toilets are at Killykeegan Nature Reserve and Marble Arch Caves Visitor Centre.

Can I bring a pram/stroller or bike?

The trail is not suitable for prams, strollers, bikes, or wheelchairs due to uneven surfaces, gravel, boardwalks, and stairs.

Trail Conditions & Safety

What should I wear?

Wear sturdy hiking boots, waterproof clothing, and layers.

Weather can change quickly on the mountain.

A hat and water are also advisable.

Is the trail safe for children?

Yes, but children should be supervised at all times, especially near the stair section and boardwalk edges.

Is the trail suitable for beginners?

Yes – many first-time hikers complete the trail.

Be prepared for a workout on the stairs, and take breaks as needed.

Is it possible to reach the summit of Cuilcagh?

The boardwalk ends at a viewing platform near the summit.

Beyond this point, the summit is not open to the public to protect the fragile bog habitat.

Experience & Etiquette

When is the best time to visit?

Visit on weekday mornings or off-season months to avoid crowds.

Spring and early autumn offer the best balance of views and weather.

Can I fly a drone or film on the trail?

Drone use is restricted and requires permission from land managers due to protected habitats and safety concerns.

Is wild camping allowed on or near the trail?

No. Camping is not permitted on the trail or surrounding land.

Is the trail suitable for solo hikers?

Yes.

The route is popular and generally safe, but solo hikers should let someone know their plans and check the weather before starting.

Is the boardwalk suitable for group hikes or tours?

Yes, but group organisers should book parking in advance and ensure all participants are briefed on trail etiquette and conservation rules.

Travel & Access

How do I get to the trailhead?

The trail is accessible by car. It’s located off the A32 Enniskillen-Swanlinbar Road, near the Marble Arch Caves. Public transport is limited, so driving is recommended. Full Directions Information Here

*A Translink summer-only bus service runs from Enniskillen to Marble Arch Caves area. However, it does not run directly along the boardwalk road.

**From Enniskillen or nearby Belcoo/Blacklion, you may need a taxi or arranged transport for the final stretch (~6 km).

Is parking available?

Yes, but it’s limited and often fills up.

Paid parking is close to the trailhead.

Overflow parking is free but adds ~1 km of walking.

Can I park at Marble Arch Caves Visitor Centre?

No – for trail access, the visitor centre car park is monitored and locked outside cave visiting hours, so it is not suitable for Cuilcagh trail parking.

Do I really need to pre-book parking?

Pre‑booking the paid car park is strongly advised to secure a space, especially on weekends or holiday periods.

Spaces are plentiful, but the trail is very popular.

*Subject to availability, we do allow parking without advance booking.

Is public transport a viable option?

Only partly.

Seasonal bus services reach Marble Arch Road, but no direct drop‑off at the trailhead.

You’ll need to arrange a taxi or onward transport from the nearest drop-off. Directions

Are the roads safe for rental cars?
